Hurt Locker: Titans again play waiting game

NASHVILLE — Maybe you’ve heard this one before.

There is a chance Jake Locker could be back as as the starting quarterback for the Tennessee Titans this week when they face the Washington Redskins.

Or he might not.

Locker, who has missed 16 of a possible 38 starts since being named the Titans’ No. 1 quarterback in 2012, is making progress, but the Titans again won’t know his status for Sunday’s game until later in the week.

“They told me I could go out and see how it did today, to go out and throw it around in the individual and see how it went from there. I felt good, so I got to do some team stuff, so I was encouraged by that,” Locker said on Wednesday.

Locker said he was able to do in drills what he needed to do.

“I felt good. I was able to do pretty much everything. There wasn’t anything I was held out of, so I felt good at that,” Locker said.

Now the question becomes, can he maintain it for a Titans team that enters the game at 2-4 and in desperation mode against a 1-5 Redskins team.

Coach Ken Whisenhunt is playing the waiting game too, after Locker split reps with backup Charlie Whitehurst, who all of a sudden this season has gone from having barely played in recent seasons to having two starts and pressed into action in another game.

“Jake did some things in practice today, so he is progressing, which is good to see. He did some more,” Whisenhunt said. “He took some snaps and participated in it on a limited basis. He’s progressing. We’ll see how it goes he continues through the week.

“It really depends on how he responds after today. I think we’ve got to see if he’s sore and where he is from that standpoint.”

The situation should play out over the course of the next few days.

MEDICAL WATCH: RB Shonn Greene sat out Wednesday’s practice with an injured hamstring. He missed last week’s game. … TE Taylor Thompson, out with a partially torn PCL, did not practice and has been out for three straight games. … TE Craig Stevens is out for the season after suffering a torn quadriceps tendon against the Browns in Week 5. … DE Ropati Pitoitua broke his hand in Sunday’s win over the Jaguars and missed Wednesday’s practice. … CB Coty Sensabaugh was limited due to the knee injury that kept him out last week. … S George Wilson was limited with a sore calf muscle.

GAME PLAN: If Locker can play, and maybe that’s a big if, the Titans need to make use of his ability to run and make plays on the move against a strong Redskins pass rush that features Brian Orakpo and Ryan Kerrigan. The Titans will need to force Redskins QB Kirk Cousins into some mistakes, as he has been in a giving mode at times with interceptions. The Redskins will go deep, so it will be up to the Titans secondary not to give up big plays.

MATCHUPS TO WATCH:

Titans LT Taylor Lewan vs. Redskins OLB Brian Orakpo. Lewan will get a bigger test in his second start than he did in his first one when he gave up one sack to Jaguars DE Chris Clemons. Orakpo on one side and Ryan Kerrigan on the other against Michael Oher will be a tough battle for a Titans offensive line that has been somewhat inconsistent.

Titans CB Jason McCourty vs. Redskins WR Desean Jackson. The Redskins like going deep to Jackson and Pierre Garcon. In past games, when facing a premier receiver, the Titans have used McCourty to match up on those receivers.
