Giants place Cruz, McBride on IR
The New York Giants placed Victor Cruz on injured reserve Tuesday, two days after the wide receiver tore the patellar tendon in his right knee.
Cornerback Trumaine McBride also landed on IR, and the Giants filled the roster spots by signing wide receiver Kevin Ogletree and cornerback Chandler Fenner.
Cruz and McBride both underwent season-ending surgery Monday at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan. McBride served as the Giants’ nickel cornerback since Walter Thurmond tore a pectoral muscle in the second game of the season and went on IR.
Cruz was hurt in the third quarter on a fourth-and-goal play from the Philadelphia Eagles’ 3-yard line. He jumped in the back right corner of the end zone for a pass from quarterback Eli Manning, and he twisted and grabbed his knee while still in the air. The pass landed incomplete.
A cart took a tearful Cruz off the field.
After making two receptions for 16 yards Sunday, Cruz finished with 23 catches for 337 yards and a touchdown this season.
McBride recorded 21 tackles, one sack and one interception in six games (one start) this season.
Ogletree was an inactive member of the Lions’ roster for the season’s first two weeks, and he was released by Detroit on Sept. 20.
Last season, Ogletree played a combined 16 games for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Lions, compiling 21 catches for 269 yards and two touchdowns.
From 2009-12, Ogletree played for the Dallas Cowboys. He recorded career-best stats in 2012: 32 receptions for 436 yards and four touchdowns.
Fenner made his NFL debut for the Giants on Oct. 5 against the Atlanta Falcons, when he appeared on special teams one day after he was promoted from the practice squad. He was waived Oct. 6.
A knee injury forced Fenner onto the Seattle Seahawks’ injured reserve list for the full 2013 season.
