Browns 31, Steelers 10

CLEVELAND — Ben Tate rushed for two touchdowns and Isaiah Crowell rushed for one Sunday to carry the Browns to a crushing 31-10 defeat of the Pittsburgh Steelers at FirstEnergy Stadium.

It marks only the second time the Browns beat Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who carried an 18-1 record against them into the game. In typical Roethlisberger fashion, he led the Steelers to a game-winning field goal against Cleveland on the final play of the season opener in Pittsburgh.

The Browns are 3-2 while the Steelers drop to 3-3.

The victory was costly for the Browns. Center Alex Mack left with a lower left leg injury and might be lost for the season.

Quarterback Brian Hoyer completed only five of 11 passes in the first half, but he threw for 146 yards in building a 21-3 halftime lead. It was the antithesis of the way the first half unfolded in Pittsburgh in the opener when the Steelers led 27-3 at halftime.

Three different players scored for the Browns in the second quarter. Crowell ran around right tackle to the front corner from the 5, Hoyer hooked up with wide receiver Jordan Cameron on a 51-yard scoring play for a 14-3 lead and Tate scored on an eight-yard run, all after the Steelers scored the only points of the first quarter on a 20-yard field goal by Shaun Suisham. Running back Tate added a one-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

The game tilted in the Browns’ favor when a botched field goal attempt prevented the Steelers from adding to their 3-0 lead early in the second quarter. Holder Brad Wing had difficulty setting the ball for Suisham. Wing picked it up and tried to run but Browns linebacker Craig Robertson buried him at the Cleveland 32 for a 15-yard loss and turnover on downs.

The Browns wasted little time. Hoyer moved the Browns to the Pittsburgh 5 on four plays. The big play in the drive was a 42-yard completion to Cameron down the right side. Crowell finished it off with his fourth rushing touchdown of the season. The Browns were in control the rest of the day.

NOTES: RB Terrance West was inactive for the Browns despite being healthy. … DE Armonty Bryant started for the Browns but midway through the first quarter was knocked out with a knee injury. … CB William Gay started at right cornerback for the Steelers for injured (forearm) Ike Taylor. … LB Sean Spence started at left inside linebacker for injured Steelers rookie (knee) Ryan Shazier.
