NFL roundup: Prosecutor wants AP arrested on pot charge
Montgomery County (Texas) prosecutors filed documents Thursday to have suspended Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson arrested on charges that he smoked marijuana — a violation of his bond conditions.
According to court records, Peterson on Wednesday admitted to an employee overseeing a court-ordered drug test that he “smoked a little weed” before the test.
The judge has yet to issue a ruling, and probably will not until after his recusal hearing is completed. That hearing is scheduled for Friday morning.
Montgomery County District Attorney Brett Ligon filed a motion asking Judge Kelly Case to recuse himself after the judge called each lead attorney in the case a “media whore.” Case apologized, saying the comment was meant as a joke.
A trial date has been scheduled for Dec. 1. Peterson is facing a felony charge of child abuse after using a wooden switch to discipline his 4-year-old son earlier this year.
Perterson’s attorney, Rusty Hardin, previously said his client is “chomping at the bit” to defend himself publicly.
Hardin has yet to comment on Thursday’s newest allegations.
–Detroit wide receiver Calvin Johnson did not practice again on Thursday and the likelihood of him playing Sunday in Minnesota is bleak.
The Detroit Free Press reported Johnson is unlikely to play after suffering a high ankle sprain on his only catch in last week’s game against Buffalo.
Running back Reggie Bush also missed practice with a bum ankle. His prospects of playing, though, are greater than Johnson’s.
–Now starting for the Cincinnati Bengals at wide receiver, Brandon Tate, Mohamed Sanu and Dane Sanzenbacher?
That riddle could be reality Sunday as offensive coordinator Hue Jackson prepares to go without Pro Bowl wide receiver A.J. Green, who left Wednesday’s practice on a cart after appearing to aggravate an injury to the big toe on his right foot.
Green was going through agility drills 15 minutes into practice when he stopped, removed his shoe and slammed it down in disgust.
Green was limping noticeably as he made his way to the sideline to climb aboard the cart.
–Tennessee Titans left tackle Michael Roos is out for the season, and the 32-year-old likely suited up for the team for the final time.
Roos, a free agent in March, is scheduled for season-ending knee surgery. The news came days after safety Bernard Pollard learned his Achilles injury would end his season.
Roos, in his 10th season, all with the Titans, is a free agent at the end of the season and the Titans already have his heir apparent in place: 2014 first-round draft pick Taylor Lewan of Michigan.
–Nick Roach, considered the glue of an Oakland Raiders defense with a lot of new parts, will not play at all in 2014. He was placed on injured reserve because of persistent concussion symptoms.
Roach was injured in the Raiders’ third preseason game on Aug. 22 against the Green Bay Packers. He returned to practice Sept. 3 and was limited, but never got through the entire concussion protocol although Roach continued to maintain he was making progress.
Roach played all 16 games for the Raiders, his first year as a full-time starter after playing with the Chicago Bears, and played every defensive snap all season.
–Wide receiver Brad Smith had surgery because of a groin injury and could miss multiple weeks.
Smith has one reception for 11 yards this season.
–Running back Jonathan Stewart was back on the Carolina Panthers’ practice field.
Stewart suffered a knee sprain in Week 3 against the Pittsburgh Steelers and has missed the past two games. His return indicates that he might be able to play Sunday against Cincinnati.
Fellow running back DeAngelo Williams remains sidelined with an ankle injury he suffered the Baltimore Ravens in Week 4.
–Detroit police said they have identified a suspect who is alleged to have shined a laser pointer at Buffalo players during Bills 17-14 victory over the ions at Ford Field on Sunday.
Mark Beslach was issued a misdemeanor citation for disorderly conduct. Beslach will have to appear in court and probably pay a small fine. The Lions also announced that his season tickets have been revoked for the remainder of the season.
Before Sunday’s game, Beslach tweeted: “You see a green light on any of the bills players just laugh cause it’s me.” His Twitter account was subsequently deleted.
–Marching to the beat of his own drummer has cost San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick $10,000.
Kaepernick said the league fined him for wearing bright pink Beats by Dre headphones around his neck after Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
The NFL has an exclusive agreement with Bose.
