NFL roundup: Petersen hearing set for Dec. 1

Published

on

Prosecutors filed a recusal motion to remove Judge Kelly W. Case from hearing the child abuse case against Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson Wednesday during his arraignment hearing in Texas.

No plea was entered by Peterson. A tentative date of Dec. 1 has been set pending a ruling on Case’s involvement. The judge apologized at the request of the prosecution for describing the district attorney’s office as “media whores.”

Peterson was indicted last month on one felony count of reckless or negligent injury to a child, which carries a possible sentence of six months to two years in state prison.

Saying Peterson is subjected to undue criticism without a chance to respond, defense attorney Rusty Hardin requested Montgomery County courts accelerate the trial start date to the week of Nov. 18, but prosectors objected, asking that the investigation into how photos of Peterson’s son leaked to media be resolved before trial.

—NFL owners unanimously voted to add another member to their club, approving Terry Pegula as the new owner of the Buffalo Bills.

The vote took place early Wednesday, where owners are holding their fall meeting.

Pegula purchased the Bills from the estate of original owner Ralph Wilson for $1.4 billion and their bid was unanimously approved by the finance committee on Sept. 17.

—Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green reaggravated his big toe injury while warming up in practice Wednesday and was carted off the field for further evaluation that included an MRI.

After the players finished their stretching before practice, Green walked over to the side of the field and took off his right cleat before throwing it hard to the ground and slamming down his helmet. He was frustrated with the injury, which dates to the season opener at Baltimore. Wednesday’s injury report listed Green with a great toe injury.

“We’ll see,” Lewis said when asked about the severity of Green’s injury and whether it might sideline him.

—Lisa Friel spent 28 years specializing in the prosecution of sex crimes as a district attorney in Manhattan and she is using her experience in law enforcement to direct the NFL on the complex matter of establishing a new personal conduct policy.

Although a new policy has not been established, Friel helped the league take initial steps during meetings at the Conrad Hotel in downtown Manhattan, where the annual fall meeting of team owners took place.

Commissioner Roger Goodell said during a September press conference that that league would want to have a policy in place by the Super Bowl. Friel said Wednesday more meetings next month could contribute to the policy being implemented sooner. However, Friel does not want the changes to happen without careful consideration from internal and external parties.

—Only 32 percent of NFL fans in a nationwide survey believe commissioner Roger Goodell should lose his job after his handling of recent domestic violence cases.

A new Associated Press-GfK Poll released Wednesday also showed those fans think Minnesota Vikings star Adrian Peterson should only be allowed to play again if he is found not guilty of felony child abuse.

For Goodell, 66 percent said he shouldn’t lose his job. Hel set off a social media firestorm when he initially suspended former Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice for two games after he was charged with assaulting his then-fiancee in an Atlantic City casino elevator.

—Denver Broncos tight end Julius Thomas has been fined $8,268 for his chop block on Arizona Cardinals defensive end Calais Campbell last Sunday, according to multiple reports Wednesday.

The hit resulted in a strained MCL for Campbell, who could miss a month.

—The Tennessee Titans placed safety Bernard Pollard on season-ending injured reserve and signed cornerback Brandon Ghee on Wednesday.

Pollard underwent surgery Tuesday for a ruptured Achilles tendon and will miss the remaining 11 games. He suffered the injury during Sunday’s 29-28 loss to the Cleveland Browns. It marks the first time in Pollard’s nine-year NFL career that he has landed on injured reserve.

The 6-foot-0, 200-pound Ghee has four years of NFL experience, all with the Cincinnati Bengals. He played in 23 games for the Bengals and totaled seven tackles, five passes defensed and eight special teams stops during his career.

—The San Francisco 49ers signed special teams player and safety Bubba Ventrone to a one-year contract Wednesday.

The 5-foot-10, 200-pound Ventrone, a nine-year NFL veteran, rejoins the 49ers after playing in all 16 games and three postseason contests with the team in 2013. He registered 15 special teams tackles and recovered a fumble for the 49ers last season.

To make room on the roster, the 49ers waived wide receiver Kassim Osgood.

—The Washington Redskins signed rookie cornerback Greg Ducre off the San Diego Chargers’ practice squad on Wednesday.

In a Washington pro day before the draft, Ducre ran the 40-yard dash in 4.34 and 4.32 seconds. He was signed to the Chargers’ practice squad on Aug. 31.

The Redskins also signed linebacker Jackson Jeffcoat from their practice squad to the active roster. The team waived cornerback Richard Crawford and safety Akeem Davis. Linebacker Steve Beauharnais was signed to the practice squad and tight end Ted Bolser was released from the practice squad.

—The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed wide receiver Eric Page to the practice squad and released tight end Taylor Sloat on Wednesday.

The 5-foot-10, 180-pound Page spent the 2013 season with Tampa Bay, recording four receptions for 68 yards and two rushes for 14 yards, while serving as the team’s primary returner, with 23 punt returns for 251 yards and 22 kick returns for 548 yards. He was also with the Bucs during the 2014 offseason and preseason.

—The New England Patriots signed offensive lineman Chris Martin and defensive lineman Joe Vellano to the practice squad on Wednesday.

Martin spent the first three weeks of the 2014 season on the Patriots practice squad. Vellano was released from the 53-man roster on Monday.

Vellano, 25, originally joined the Patriots as a rookie free agent out of Maryland in 2013. He played in 21 games with eight starts for the Patriots and registered 54 total tackles and three sacks. He played in five games in 2014 and had six total tackles and one sack.

The Patriots also released offensive lineman Caylin Hauptmann from the practice squad. Hauptmann, 23, was signed to the practice squad on Sept. 16.

—Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson and Denver Broncos wide receiver Demaryius Thomas took Players of the Week honors announced Wednesday.

Wilson was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week after taking apart Washington’s defense for 201 yards passing and another 122 yards rushing in Monday night’s 27-17 win over the Redskins. Thomas was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week.

Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Marcell Dareus took the AFC defensive honors. Cleveland Browns linebacker Tank Carder won the AFC special teams award.

Green Bay Packers linebacker Julius Peppers took the NFC defensive honors. San Francisco 49ers kicker Phil Dawson won the NFC special teams award. He converted all five field-goal attempts and scored 16 points in a 22-17 win over the Kansas City Chiefs.
