Quick turnaround as Colts face Texans on Thursday

Published

on

The Indianapolis Colts are in for a quick turnaround following a 20-13 home win over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.

Usually, Colts coach Chuck Pagano refers to the 24-hour rule. Celebrate a win for 24 hours and then start to get ready for the next opponent on the schedule.

However, with a huge AFC South matchup against the Houston Texans coming up quickly on Thursday night, Pagano called for the 24-minute rule. Nice win, great job, and now start getting ready for the Texans.

To that end, the Indianapolis coaching staff spent Sunday night back at team headquarters breaking down Houston game tape.

While there had been some advance work done already, Pagano and Company went right to work hours after the completion of the Baltimore game and began gearing up for Houston.

“We’ve got some stuff to clean up (from the Baltimore game). But (Monday’s practice) was a good start for our preparations for Thursday night,” Pagano said.

“Always a challenge on a short week bringing guys in. To play the kind of game we played (against the Ravens) a very physical game, and then to have a short turnaround. It’s a challenge to get your guys back.”

Pagano isn’t worried about working in an offensive and defensive game plan despite a short work week.

“The mental part is probably the easiest,” Pagano said. “But physically just getting your body back, that’s the biggest challenge. But we’ve moved on and we’re ready to get to continue prep for the Texans.”

The Colts had a limited practice session on Monday and then will have a full workout on Tuesday. Following a brief walkthrough on Wednesday morning, Indianapolis will leave for Houston.

“You try to do as much work in advance as you possibly can,” Pagano said. “So you’ve got to get ahead. And guys came in. I think most everybody, 90-95 percent of the guys, came in (to the team’s facility) right after the game. Like we said, it was the 24-minute rule and not the 24-hour rule. The guys came right in and went to work.

“Had most of the leg work. It’s a difficult task. It’s hard on everybody. But it is what it is. The game’s going to be played Thursday night. So we’ve just got to deal with it accordingly.”

Keeping the players as fresh as possible and allowing them to get their legs back is crucial.

“We want to make sure that we don’t ankle weight them,” Pagano said. “It’s going to be tough enough to get them back from a physical standpoint. You want to keep them fresh. And from a mental standpoint, you want to make it easy as possible. But you can’t be so vanilla that you that you have any bullets in the chamber, so to speak. We’ve got to do our due diligence and make sure these guys can play fast.”

REPORT CARD VS. RAVENS

PASSING OFFENSE: B — QB Andrew Luck completed 32 of 49 passes for 312 yards and a TD. Luck was sacked once and threw a pair of interceptions. He was hit as he was throwing the ball on the first interception and the second pass was forced into coverage and was tipped. WR TY Hilton caught nine passes for 90 yards while WR Reggie Wayne added seven receptions for 77 yards. TE Dwayne Allen had four receptions and a TD.

RUSHING OFFENSE: B — RB Ahmad Bradshaw had a game-high 68 yards in 15 carries while RB Trent Richardson added 37 yards in nine carries. Luck rushed for a TD on a scramble in the fourth quarter. As a team, the Colts averaged 3.9 yards on 30 rushing attempts.

PASS DEFENSE: B-plus — Ravens QB Joe Flacco had been sacked just three times in the first four games of the season. But the Colts got to Flacco four times, getting two from OLB Bjoern Werner and one each from DE Cory Redding and S Sergio Brown. Flacco was also intercepted once as CB Vontae Davis came up with the ball. Davis did a great job of shadowing Baltimore WR Steve Smith Sr., who was limited to five catches for 34 yards.

RUSH DEFENSE: B-plus — Former Indianapolis RB Justin Forsett led the Ravens with 42 yards on six carries. Forsett scored Baltimore’s only touchdown of the game with an 11-yard run. RB Bernard Pierce added 30 yards in four carries. The Ravens ran for 90 yards as a team.

SPECIAL TEAMS: B-minus — The good news was the play of PK Adam Vinatieri, who connected on field goals of 38 and 34 yards, and P Pat McAfee, who averaged 47.7 yards net on three punts. Two of his kicks were downed inside the Ravens’ 20-yard line. He also had three touchbacks on kickoffs. The bad news was the inconsistent play of PR/KR Griff Whalen, who fumbled one punt return and made a questionable decision to run out a kickoff from deep in his own end zone.

COACHING: B — Indianapolis struggled at times on offense against the Ravens, but ended up making the plays needed to win. And the Colts sometimes maligned defense stepped up big time against a Baltimore offense that had been averaging 25.8 points per game, holding the Ravens to just one touchdown and 13 points. The decision to replace veteran A.Q. Shipley with undrafted rookie Jonotthan Harrison at center remains a bit of a head scratcher and no real reason was given for the decision. Still, kudos to the Indianapolis coaching staff for coming up with an offensive and defensive game plan to get the job done.
