Arians still livid at Broncos’ chop block
TEMPE, Ariz. — Arizona Cardinals coach Bruce Arians is still angry about the chop block that injured defensive end Calais Campbell’s right knee Sunday. Campbell has an medial collateral ligament sprain and could miss a month.
Denver Broncos tight end Julius Thomas hit Campbell in the knee as Campbell was preparing to engage tackle Ryan Clady. A penalty was called, negating a touchdown, and Campbell left the game. He didn’t return.
“I’ve been coaching 37 years; it’s the dirtiest play I’ve ever seen in the National Football League,” Arians said after the game. “It was a flat chop block and it put him out of the game. I’ve never seen anything like it.
“Somebody has got to answer to that. A fine isn’t going to do it when he’s going to miss three to four weeks.”
Arians was still mad about it on Monday.
He said, “You’ll never convince me it wasn’t premeditated. One guy set him up, and the other guy (hit him).”
Arians talked to Broncos coach John Fox after the game. The two are good friends, and Arians wanted to make Fox aware of the play, to make sure that type of block wasn’t being coached.
“I have great respect for John,” Arians said.
