Ohio State defensive end Noah Spence apologized Saturday for getting suspended.

Spence was disciplined for a second violation of Big Ten rules. He is ineligible to play Saturday’s game against Kent State.

The All-Big Ten player sent an apology via text message to the Columbus Dispatch.

“I want to apologize to my family, Ohio State’s coaching staff, the Big Ten Conference and Buckeye Nation for the disappointment,” Spence wrote. “I will work extremely hard to get healthy and to one day use this unfortunate situation to be a positive role model for others. Thank you.”

Ohio State announced the suspension in a statement on Friday.

“Noah Spence is ineligible to play for the Buckeyes (Saturday) against Kent State because of a university and Big Ten Conference rule violation,” the statement read. “Ohio State and the Spence family will continue to work with the Big Ten until there is final resolution to this matter.”

Spence, an Academic All-Big Ten honoree and a two-time OSU Scholar-Athlete, was suspended for three games — the Orange Bowl last season and the first two games of this season — because traces of ecstasy were found in his system after a drug test at the Big Ten title game.

In an email to The Columbus Dispatch, his parents stressed that his football career is secondary because their son has come clean about having a “medical illness.”

“We love him dearly, and our focus is to get him the best medical attention we can,” Greg and Helen Spence said. “We are hopeful that Noah can get healthy and, at some point, resume his career with the Buckeyes.”
