Report: Dwight Freeney To Sign With Atlanta Falcons
Does Dwight Freeney have anything left in the tank? How does he fit in Atlanta?
The Atlanta Falcons are hoping to catch some veteran lightning in a bottle as they’re reportedly set to sign former Indianapolis Colts, San Diego Chargers and Arizona Cardinals edge rusher Dwight Freeney to a one-year deal.

The fit seems like a pretty good one for both Freeney and the Falcons, as he gets to continue his playing career on a fast track, with the Falcons playing a minimum of nine games indoors (their eight home games plus a road game at New Orleans).
The seven-time Pro Bowler has 119.5 sacks which ranks him fourth among active players and 19th on the all-time list. When he decides to hang up the cleats it’s likely that he eventually gets enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton.
First Freeney has to make the Falcons team as they spent a first-round pick last year on Vic Beasley. Aside from Beasley, there really isn’t a lot of edge rushers on the team. Tyson Jackson and Adrian Clayborn are bigger left-end types and there seems to be a great need for a player of Freeney’s caliber.
In head coach Dan Quinn’s first season under the helm, the team finished 18th in pass defense, but dead last in sacks with just 19. To give you an idea how bad that is, they were nine sacks away from finishing…29th in the league in sacks (San Francisco- 28).
It’s unclear how much, if anything Freeney has left in the tank, but based on the Falcons anemic pass rush from a season ago and the fact they did very little to improve it in the offseason, it’s certainly worth it for the team to kick the tires.
