NFL AM: Week 14 Observations

Find out everything you need to know about the weekend’s games in a two-minute read.

Philadelphia 23, Buffalo 20

The Eagles have suddenly won two straight games and remain tied for first place in the NFC Least.  Sam Bradford is going to have to play much better if the Eagles are going to go anywhere….At 6-7, the Bills are basically out of the postseason race.  Tyrod Taylor and the Bills don’t appear to be that far away and the playoffs should be the expectation in 2016.

Cleveland 24, S.F. 10

Johnny Manziel is certainly unorthodox and I don’t think you can win with him as your starter on a consistent basis.  With that said, he’s played considerably better than expected this season and he will get a shot to be a starter again….Blaine Gabbert took nine sacks on Sunday, proving once again that he’s not an NFL starter.  There should be a solid quarterback for San Francisco to take in the first round of next year’s draft.

St. Louis 17, Detroit 10

Can the Rams win enough games to save Jeff Fisher’s job?  Probably not, but he probably should have been fired at the end of last year…..Can the Lions lose enough games to cost Jim Caldwell his job?  If so, they’ll be better off.

New Orleans 24, Tampa Bay 17

Drew Brees is still an excellent quarterback and the Saints should look to trade him and gather assets because they’re not close to being a contender….Costly loss for the Bucs as they were trying to knock on the Wildcard door.  It’s still been a nice season for them, even if they don’t win another game.

New York Jets 30, Tennessee 8

The Jets can run the ball, they have a good tandem of receivers and they play good defense.  In a weakened AFC, they can do damage if they get in the postseason….The Titans need to put pieces around Marcus Mariota and it’s going to take more than one draft and free agency class to do so.

Pittsburgh 33, Cincinnati 20

Pittsburgh is peaking at the right time and although their schedule is tough, they will be battle tested if they can get in the dance.  Antonio Brown is the most dynamic receiver in the NFL….We’re going to find out exactly how good the Bengals roster is without Andy Dalton.  A.J. McCarron is trying to become the first former Alabama quarterback to win a game as a starter since 1987.

Jacksonville 51, Indy 16

The Jaguars offense is dangerous, young and explosive, and they should be good for a long time.  Once they fix the defense, this will be a real contender….The Colts have run out of gas and Matt Hasselbeck is hurt.  It’s not all his fault, but Chuck Pagano’s days are numbered.

Kansas City 10, S.D. 3

The Chiefs didn’t play well, as they only scored it one quarter, but they won again.  Guess what?  They’re not going to lose another game in the regular season….The Chargers are going nowhere to L.A. fast.  New city, new head coach, and they need a new offensive line around Philip Rivers.

Washington 24, Chicago 21

The Redskins control their own destiny as far as an NFC East title.  If they win the division, they’ll be little more than a speed bump for the Seahawks in the first round…..The Bears had another moral victory.  They’re still ahead of where we thought they’d be this season.

Carolina 38, Atlanta 0

Cam Newton is on the very short list of not only the league’s Most Valuable Player Award, but also the most fun players to watch.  Carolina is rolling and they should win their first playoff game in a decade….The bottom fell out for the Falcons, but they have a very winnable game in Jacksonville next weekend.

Seattle 35, Baltimore 6

If there’s a quarterback playing better football than Cam Newton, it’s Russell Wilson.  He’s been spectacular over the past month and so has Seattle.  They will have to figure out what to do without Thomas Rawls, who broke his ankle and will miss the rest of the season…..Jimmy Clausen played quarterback for the Ravens.  That’s about all you need to know.

Oakland 15, Denver 12

And just like that the Brock Osweiler love fest has ended, as he was erratic at best in the second-half Sunday.  Now there’s major pressure to play Peyton Manning….Khalil Mack is maybe the second-best defensive player in the NFL.  Jack Del Rio will have the Raiders in playoff contention next year.

Green Bay 28, Dallas 7

At least now we don’t have to think about all those Cowboys as NFC East champion scenarios.  They need to invest in a young quarterback next year….The Packers didn’t look great for much of the game, and they still won by three touchdowns.  The run defense needs to be better.

New England 27, Houston 6

The Pats defense may be the most underrated of any unit in the NFL.  They can get after the quarterback and are loaded with first and second-round picks.  With Andy Dalton going down as well as Denver, the Pats will again have home-field advantage in the postseason….The Texans are a mess and Brian Hoyer has a concussion.  The last two weeks, the Bills and Patriots got really physical with J.J. Watt and he didn’t do much.

New York Giants 31, Miami 24

The Giants finally closed a game and stayed in a three-way tie for first place in the NFC East.  Their roster is really bad, but Eli Manning is playing well and Odell Beckham, Jr. is an absolute freak….The Dolphins have a lot to figure out in the offseason, starting with why they don’t give Lamar Miller the ball more.
