49ers Trade Vernon Davis To Broncos: Instant Analysis

Find out what the Broncos are getting in the former Pro Bowl tight end.

The NFL’s trade deadline is usually much more bark than bite, with impact trades being few and far between.  With the deadline coming Tuesday afternoon, the first deal has just gone down.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that the San Francisco 49ers are sending former Pro Bowl tight end Vernon Davis to the Denver Broncos in exchange for a swap of sixth-round picks in 2016, and Denver will send San Francisco their seventh-round pick in 2017.

Broncos personnel czar John Elway weighed in.

Our take:  The Broncos are getting a very good athlete who should fit in well in their offense.  It’s tough to say how much Davis has left in the tank after being exiled in San Francisco.  Davis has just 18 catches for 194 yards this season.

The 49ers are getting some compensation for a player that they had no plans of signing in the offseason when he becomes a free agent.  This will be a great audition for the Broncos as they are looking for an upgrade at the position as it appears that they miss Julius Thomas, who left in free agency for Jacksonville.

It’s a win-win for both teams and Davis could possibly make a few plays to get the Broncos over the top.  The deal obviously improves his fantasy value (going from Colin Kaepernick to Peyton Manning), but don’t expect miracles.

Davis is owed just over $2.3 million by Denver for the rest of this season.
