Grand jury indicts RB Dwyer on felony assault charge
A Maricopa County (Ariz.) Grand Jury indicted Arizona Cardinals running back Jonathan Dwyer on a felony charge of aggravated assault stemming from two incidents involving his wife in July.
The indictment was returned on Friday. The aggravated assault charge is a class 4 felony. In addition to that charge, Dwyer was indicted on eight misdemeanors that included one assault charge.
The indictment charged Dwyer with breaking his wife’s nose during a July 21 argument and engaged in a dispute the following day in which he punched his wife and threw a shoe at his 17-month-old son, who wasn’t injured.
Dwyer had been booked on suspicion of assaulting his son, but the indictment doesn’t charge him with crimes related to the child.
The Cardinals placed Dwyer on the reserve/non-football illness list, meaning he can’t play for Arizona again this season. The NFL has said the Dwyer case will be reviewed under the league’s personal-conduct policy.
