Harbaugh: Reports of dissention ‘a bunch of crap’
San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh reacted strongly to reports suggesting he has “lost” the lockerroom and that many of the players want Harbaugh gone.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Sunday morning that there is growing dissention between Harbaugh and his players, and analyst and former NFL cornerback Deion Sanders said on the same network later that night that the 49ers don’t want to play for their coach anymore.
“Personally, I think that’s a bunch of crap,” Harbaugh said Monday, a day after the 49ers rallied to beat the Philadelphia Eagles to even their record at 2-2.
“They want him out. They’re not on the same page,” Sanders said Sunday night. “I really want to know if they’re really playing for the head coach. I got a question with that. Are you really down with your head coach, San Francisco 49ers? Because the way it looks and what I’m hearing, you’re really not down for your head coach. And that’s a problem.
“They really got some problems that we hear rumblings. We all know people inside locker rooms.”
Sunday’s reports came on the heels of a similar report by Rapoport earlier this season, and ESPN analyst Trent Dilfer said Monday that the atmosphere within the team has become “almost toxic,” saying it was not overdramatic to says Harbaugh may have been coaching for his job against the Eagles.
“Well, I think… whenever you’re talking about unnamed sources – when somebody’s got a good story to tell they want to put their name to it,” Harbaugh said when asked if he’s bothered by the reports. “If you had a good story to tell you’d put your name to it. If I had a good story to tell I’d want to put my name to it. So, I don’t put a lot of credibility into the unnamed source.”
Harbaugh maintains any open door policy with his players, and said there have been no specific issues raised regarding the chemistry within the team. He also checks in with selected players to gauge any issues, but declined to go into any specifics.
“This has gone on way too far in my opinion,” Harbaugh said after reporters returned to questions about the locker room for a second time Monday. “We’re talking about unnamed sources.”
Harbaugh’s future with the team has been debated since the end of last season. Despite three trips to the playoffs since joining the 49ers, a reported rift with the front office led to speculation he was nearly traded to the Cleveland Browns early in the offseason. He has also been connected to rumors at the University of Michigan, Harbaugh’s alma mater, where embattled head coach Brady Hoke may not last the season.
