Lions LB Levy to have hip surgery, season likely over
The Sports Xchange
DETROIT — Linebacker DeAndre Levy will undergo hip surgery, and even though the Detroit Lions have not placed him on injured reserve, there’s a chance his season is over.
“After consulting with all our medical staff, all of our training staff, outside sources as well, the best immediate course of action for him is to get surgery,” Lions coach Jim Caldwell said. “He had a little setback during the course of the game, and so (he’ll undergo) surgery here in short order.”
Levy missed the first four games, and after returning last Sunday, he exited late in the second quarter.
One of the Lions’ defensive stars, he had 151 tackles in 2014, ranking second in the NFL, and in 2013, he tied for second in the league with six interceptions.
“Very, very integral part of what we do,” Caldwell said. “But, we do have some capable guys obviously in that position.”
Josh Bynes will continue starting at weak-side linebacker.
–Tight end Eric Ebron missed Week 5 due to a knee injury and said he could have helped the Lions win a game they lost 42-17 to the Cardinals.
“Of a game that I should’ve absolutely tore apart? It was hard,” he said of the emotions watching the loss. “That was my gameplan going in. It still hurts because I knew we shouldn’t have been in that situation. If I would’ve played, we wouldn’t have been in that situation, but stuff happens, man. It’s the NFL. You risk your life every time you go out there, so it hurts.”
–QB Matthew Stafford won his appeal against the NFL over a $5,787 fine for wearing all-blue cleats in Week 4 against the Seahawks. He presented his case Tuesday to Merton Hanks, the league’s vice president of football operations.
“I understood, and I will move on with a new pair of cleats,” Stafford said.
NOTES: SS James Ihedigbo (quad) and DT Haloti Ngata (calf) missed practice Wednesday, making their status unclear Sunday. … TE Eric Ebron (knee) was limited Wednesday, and his status for Week 6 is also unclear. … DE Jason Jones (knee) and OT LaAdrian Waddle (knee) were limited Wednesday, but should play Sunday. … RB Joique Bell (ankle) and ROG Larry Warford (ankle) were full participants Wednesday and should play Sunday after both missed the last two games.
