Injuries tearing apart Jaguars roster

JACKSONVILLE — The Jacksonville Jaguars lost their best offensive lineman, Brandon Linder, for the season when he was put on the injured reserve list with a torn labrum.

Rookie A.J. Cann will continue to start in his place after starting in Indianapolis.

He is the second starter to be lost for the season. First-round pick Dante Fowler was lost in his first practice of the offseason with a torn ACL.

Two injured starters, defensive tackle Sen’Derrick Marks and tight end Julius Thomas, have yet to play in the regular season, but are expected back soon.

“He’s obviously a big part of that offensive line,” head coach Gus Bradley said of Linder. “His mentality and what he brings and his leadership. But I thought A.J. did a nice job.”

But wait, there’s more.

The Jaguars may lose another starter for several weeks because middle linebacker Paul Posluszny suffered a high ankle sprain. Bradley said he hopes it is not as a bad as a “traditional” high ankle sprain that sidelines a player six to seven weeks.

Undrafted rookie Thurston Armbrister was thrust into his spot and played 38 snaps after playing only special teams the first three games.

And …

Cornerback Aaron Colvin was sidelined with a shoulder injury and did not return. His status will be updated later in the week. Colvin had his first sack when he stopped a scrambling Matt Hasselbeck short of the scrimmage line.

And. …

Free safety James Sample also left the game with a shoulder injury and his status will be updated later in the week.

End M*A*S*H report.

Now a spelling lesson on Xs and Os.

The Jaguars figured the Colts would concentrate on stopping wide receiver Allen Robinson, which would open thing up for Allen Hurns.

“All week (offensive coordinator Greg Olson) said, ‘Win your matchup and the opportunity would be there,’” Hurns said. “I felt pretty good against those guys.”

It worked out the way Olson figured it would.

Hurns caught 11 passes for 116 yards and a touchdown, but the effort was wasted in the loss.

While Hurns was doing his part, catching all but four of the passes thrown his way, Robinson was targeted 12 times and caught only four for 80 yards. Hurns said he played on an ankle injury he suffered early in the game.

“I was in pain, but the adrenaline was flowing and I was able to go,” he said. “If I can go, I will.”

–After missing two games with a calf injury, strong safety Johnathan Cyprien led the defense as he made 14 tackles and had a fumble recovery.

“I thought he tackled better,” Bradley said. “I thought he played aggressively. He was down in the box. I thought he really saw a bigger picture. I saw him make a couple of plays I don’t know he would have made last year. It felt like he played at a higher comfort level than he did last year. I think he had the production we’re looking for from him.”

Notes: Defensive end Ryan Davis had 1.5 sacks for the Jaguars while playing as a backup. … Defensive tackle Sen’Derrick Marks, who hasn’t played since tearing his ACL in the season finale last year, will have his practice activity increased this week and his status for the game Sunday will be updated Friday. … Tight end Julius Thomas, who suffered a broken bone in his hand in the first preseason game, underwent a test Monday to determine if he will be cleared to catch the ball with his right hand and status is pending. … Wide receiver Marqise Lee, who missed the last six quarters, will continue to undergo rehab on his hamstring. … Safety Sergio Brown (calf) missed Sunday’s game. … Running back Denard Robinson (knee) missed his second game. … Linebacker John Lotulelei (concussion) is still in the league’s protocol system.
