NFL Fun Stats – Week 3
The numbers show that Rex Ryan is coaching physical football in Buffalo.
NFL Fun Stats is put together to provide a wide range of number-oriented morsels for those who crave the delicacy and geek-dom of NFL statistics, news and notes. If you’re not quoting one note each week, I’m not doing my job.
Here are your water cooler nuggets:
150
Receiving yards per game is the average Atlanta Falcons receiver Julio Jones has had over his last seven games (four from last season). He has also averaged nearly 10 catches per game over that stretch of with 9.4 grabs per contest. Simply put, he is on a tear and there’s no defense that can stop him at the moment.
1
Back-up quarterback has been able to start and lead his team to victory. He is none other than Cleveland Browns, former first-round pick Johnny Manziel. Four other replacement quarterbacks have had starts this season which includes the Dallas Cowboys’ Brandon Weeden, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Michael Vick, the New Orleans Saints’ Luke McCown and the Chicago Bears’ Jimmy Clausen. All four have failed to pick up the “W.”
3
Straight games Buffalo Bills’ rookie running back Karlos Williams has had a rushing touchdown. He’s the only non-quarterback to achieve the task.
129
Points lead the NFL in scoring by the Arizona Cardinals. I thought it was their defense that was supposed to be the heart of the team? Dating back to last season, Carson Palmer has thrown at least two touchdown passes in eight of his last nine games. The defense ranks second in points allowed (49) behind only the Carolina Panthers with 48. The Cardinals are firing on all cylinders.
11
Rushing yards accumulated by Philadelphia Eagles DeMarco Murray after appearing in two games (missing one). At this time last season, the NFL’s rushing champion (2014) had 385 rushing yards. Fair enough to say he is in a slump and not living up to the hefty price tag of the five-year, $42 million contract he signed this past March.
1
Is the Buffalo Bills ranking both running the football and defending the run.
20.5
Is the average carries per game by Pittsburgh Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell. He is the only running back in the league to be above 20 carries per game.
200
Club for yards gained is drastically different between the running back and receiving positions. The NFL has 10 players with 200 yards rushing. In the receiving the category 23 players have 200 or more receiving yards. The plateau for receivers extends even further with six receivers having at least 300 yards and two with 400 yards. It is a valid indication of the continuing trend of NFL offenses passing more and more.
0
Touchdowns on the season by star studded names such as Indianapolis Colts T.Y. Hilton, Seattle Seahawks Marshawn Lynch, Buffalo Bills LeSean McCoy and Cincinnati Bengals Giovani Bernard.
3
Touchdown passes thrown by Philadelphia Eagles Sam Bradford after three games. Considering the hype surrounding the Chip Kelly driven offense, odds favor most people thinking that number would be significantly higher. In fact in three of the four seasons Bradford played with the St. Louis Rams he exceeded more than three touchdowns after three games. His career-high is six touchdown passes after the first three games of an NFL season and it happened in 2013, which turned out to be the last year in which Bradford threw a pass in a regular season game for the Rams.
14
Straight AFC South wins by Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts. Luck is officially questionable for Sunday’s game against the Jaguars, but the Colts will still be looking to extend that impressive streak. Luck has a 17-2 career record in AFC South games.
