Packers 38, Bears 17

Published

on

CHICAGO — Aaron Rodgers threw four touchdown passes — two each to Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb — and the Green Bay Packers broke open a tight game after halftime to beat the Chicago Bears 38-17 Sunday.

The Packers, who led only by 21-17 at halftime, scored on their first six possessions, scoring on every offensive drive until a Mason Crosby field goal attempt was blocked with 4:47 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Chicago failed to score after halftime, with quarterback Jay Cutler throwing a pair of third-quarter interceptions.

It was a wild afternoon of offense, just the second game in NFL history in which neither team punted.

The Bears outgained the Packers by more than 100 yards and had over 300 yards before halftime, but still trailed — unable to keep pace with Green Bay because of a series of errors, some of them physical and some of them tactical.

Early in the second quarter of a 7-7 game, the Bears had a first-and-goal inside the Green Bay 1-yard line and lined up in the shotgun. But before the snap, guard Kyle Long was called for a false start, pushing the Bears back. They eventually had to settle for a short field goal by Robbie Gould.

Later in the half, the Bears failed on an onside kickoff attempt after taking a 17-14 lead.

Just before halftime, Chicago had a first-and-goal at the Packers 9-yard line. On third down with nine seconds remaining — and Chicago out of timeouts — Cutler threw to tight end Martellus Bennett who was inches short of the goal line. Packers safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, spotting Bennett nearly 60 pounds, wrapped him up and held him inches away from a touchdown as the clock ran out.

Linebacker Clay Matthews returned a Cutler interception 45 yards in the third quarter to set up a Green Bay touchdown that opened a 14-point lead. And, finally, on the first play of the fourth quarter, Bears linebacker Jonathan Bostic was called for holding while Green Bay’s Crosby kicked a 23-yard field goal. The penalty created an automatic first down and on the next play, Rodgers threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Cobb.

Rodgers completed 22 of 28 passes for 302 yards. Cobb caught seven passes for 113 yards and Nelson caught 10 for 108.

Running back Matt Forte led the Bears with 122 yards rushing on 23 carries and went over 10,000 scrimmage yards in his career.

NOTES: Leading 17-14 in the second quarter, the Bears tried a surprise onside kickoff but the Packers recovered it at their own 39-yard line. … Chicago special-teamer Ahmad Dixon left the game in the second quarter with a hamstring injury. … Bears QB Jay Cutler has a 1-10 record against Green Bay, including seven straight defeats as a starter. He has thrown at least one interception in every game against the Packers. … In the fourth quarter, Bears coach Marc Trestman threw a challenge flag on a Cutler pass that was called an interception on the field. The call was overturned but Chicago was penalized a timeout for challenging a play that is automatically challenged. … Green Bay now has a 10-0 record in games played the week after QB Aaron Rodgers had a passer rating below 90. … WR Brandon Marshall’s touchdown catch for the Bears was his fifth in four games.
