Patriots deal reserve tight end to Saints

The New England Patriots traded tight end Michael Hoomanawanui to the New Orleans Saints on Wednesday in exchange for fourth-year defensive tackle Akim Hicks.

Hoomanawanui was a healthy scratch in last Sunday’s win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, having fallen to fourth on the depth chart behind Rob Gronkowski, Scott Chandler and Michael Williams.

Hicks is a 6-foot-5, 324-pound former 2012 third-round pick who started 33 of 48 career games in New Orleans, including all three games this season. He had just two tackles and seemingly had fallen out of favor with the team.

Hoomanawanui had been with the Patriots since 2012. He was a fifth-round draft pick by the St. Louis Rams in 2010.

Last season, Hoomanawanui started 12 games and had three catches for the Patriots. He played in two games as a reserve this season but had no receptions.

In New Orleans, Hoomanawanui will be added to a tight end mix that includes former Patriot Ben Watson and third-year pro Josh Hill.
