Despite injury, Luck expects to shoulder the load

INDIANAPOLIS — Will he or won’t he? That’s the biggest question coming out of Wednesday’s Indianapolis Colts practice.

Will quarterback Andrew Luck be in the Colts’ starting lineup Sunday when then Jacksonville Jaguars visit Lucas Oil Stadium in an AFC South showdown?

According to both Indianapolis head coach Chuck Pagano and Luck himself, the answer would be yes.

Luck saw limited work during Wednesday’s practice session as he nursed a sore right shoulder. The injury is not considered to be serious. How much work the quarterback gets the rest of the week remains to be seen.

“I would not bet against 12,” Pagano said after the workout.

Luck maintains that he’ll be ready for the Jacksonville game. Or at least that’s the game plan.

“Didn’t feel as good as I would have liked after (the Tennessee) game,” he said Wednesday.

“So we’ll take it day by day. Expect to play, that’s for sure. Obviously going to defer to doctors and trainers and coaches on everything when it comes to that. But hopefully a little more (practice) tomorrow and ready to go.”

Luck stressed that the injury occurred against the Titans and was not something that he had been dealing with through the first two games of the season.

The quarterback would not confirm whether or not he underwent an MRI. There were plenty of clues, though, that there was some sort of issue coming out of the Tennessee game.

Luck appeared to be in some discomfort during and after the win.

At the time, Luck brushed off questions about an injury issues and simply said he was suffering from the usual bumps and bruises associated with playing in a very physical game against a division opponent.

Luck said the same thing a day later when asked how he felt. Again, normal bumps and bruises were mentioned.

Then things got interesting. Indianapolis added a quarterback, Alex Tanney, to its practice squad on Tuesday after only carrying two on its 53-man roster through the first three games of the season.

And then during Wednesday’s practice, Luck did not participate in any of the team’s throwing drills. Primary backup Matt Hasselbeck and Tanney handled all the passing, although Luck did some work handing the ball off to running backs.

Luck doesn’t foresee a chance of not playing against Jacksonville this week.

“I’m not approaching it that way,” Luck said. “Of course, no one has a crystal ball for that sort of thing. But I fully expect to be out there.

“You trust in the plan and you work with it. You listen to the head coach on matters like this. He’s the head coach for a reason. He knows what he’s doing. The trainers are the trainers for a reason. Got to trust in them and keep rolling.”
