SAN DIEGO — Free safety Eric Weddle is likely in his last year with the San Diego Chargers and, despite high expectations, it hasn’t been pretty thus far.

But the Pro Bowler with the expiring contract isn’t surprised the team lost two of its three games. He notes it is a team unable to do the simplest of tasks.

“We just have to do the things necessary to win,” he said, “Like don’t turn the ball over, play well on first and second down and give ourselves a chance on third down. We need to play team ball.”

The Chargers did none of that in Sunday’s 31-14 loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

A growing list of injuries, especially along the offensive line, is making it difficult for the team, and quarterback Philip Rivers, who was pulled in the fourth quarter for his own health after being sacked four times.

Center Chris Watt tried to go with a groin injury, but ended up on the sideline.

It was just part of a terrible game along the line, as three Chargers offensive linemen where hobbled during the game.

Left guard Orlando Franklin left with what appeared to be a serious ankle injury. Left tackle King Dunlap was sidelined with a concussion. Right guard D.J. Fluker played hurt and it looked that way. Guard/tackle Chris Hairston was injured, tackle Kenny Wiggins, hardly the team’s first choice, saw plenty of playing time just because he was healthy.

It was a disaster with shoddy pass protection and few running lanes.

“I thought the guys fought hard,” Watt said. “Hopefully I can get back out there as quick as I can.”

Watt agreed things didn’t go well. “At the end of the day, Philip got hit too much,” Watt said. “We have to do better in that regard.

Notes: Cornerback Jason Verrett (foot) was forced from the game and didn’t return. … Cornerback Brandon Flowers (knee) was a late scratch. … Tight end Ladarius Green (concussion) was inactive for Sunday’s game. … Guard Johnnie Troutman (arm) is getting better, but it is doubtful he will be ready for this week’s game.
