Bears trade away DE Allen, LB Bostic for picks

The Chicago Bears traded way two high-profile defensive players Monday who apparently don’t fit the scheme of new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.

First, the Bears sent defensive end Jared Allen to the Carolina Panthers and received a conditional draft pick in return. Later in the day, the Bears traded linebacker Jonathan Bostic to the New England Patriots in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick, multiple media outlets reported.

Both deals are pending physicals for Allen and Bostic.

Allen, a four-time All-Pro selection, leads the NFL with 134 sacks since 2004 and played for the Kansas City Chiefs and Minnesota Vikings before signing with the Bears prior to the 2014 season.

Allen gives the Panthers a pass-rushing end with Charles Johnson (hamstring) expected to miss at least one week.

Allen moved to outside linebacker this spring in the Bears’ transition to a 3-4 defense under coach John Fox. He did not seem as effective in that role.

Bostic was the Bears leading tackler last season and started 17 games in his first two NFL seasons. But he was never able to seriously challenge for one of the starting inside linebacker spots this year, partly because a back problem caused him to fall behind in the Bears’ offseason program.

The Patriots inherit Bostic’s contract, which runs through 2016.
