Jets to honor Boozer, Snell in Ring of Honor
The Sports Xchange
The New York Jets announced Sunday that former running backs Emerson Boozer and Matt Snell will be inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor in 2015.
The induction ceremony will take place at halftime of the Nov. 29 game against the Miami Dolphins at MetLife Stadium.
“It’s a great feeling,” Boozer said. “It’s an anticipation, something that I hoped would occur, not so much this year but in my lifetime.
“I don’t know whether we were Butch and Sundance, but we were a pretty tough duo,” Boozer said about his work with Snell from 1966-69, including the 1969 victory in Miami over the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III.
Snell, the Jets’ first-round pick (third overall) of the 1964 American Football League draft out of Ohio State, ran for 948 yards in 14 starts, including 180 yards in a win over the Houston Oilers — two franchise rookie records that still stand today.
Two years later, Boozer was selected as team’s sixth-round pick (46th overall) of the 1966 AFL draft out of Maryland-Eastern Shore, averaging 9.5 yards per offensive touch as a rookie that led the AFL. He later became the first Jet to rush for three touchdowns in a game, in 1967, and scored three TDs in a game five times in all. His 13 total touchdowns in 1967 led the AFL and his 14 TDs in 1972 topped the NFL.
From 1966-69, the tandem combined for 4,235 rushing yards, 149 receptions for 1,353 yards and 49 touchdowns. Snell, who ran for the game’s only touchdown, finished with a game-high 161 yards from scrimmage in Super Bowl III.
In his nine Jets seasons from 1964-72, Snell ran for 4,285 yards — fourth-most in franchise history — and 24 touchdowns and had 193 receptions for 1,375 yards and seven TDs. He played in three AFL All-Star Games and was voted the Jets’ MVP in 1965.
Boozer played 10 seasons, from 1966-75, rushed for 5,135 yards — third in franchise history — and 52 touchdowns and caught 139 passes for 1,488 yards and 12 TDs. He played in two AFL All-Star Games and was named team MVP in 1973.
In 2010, the Jets created the Ring of Honor to celebrate former greats and commemorate their place in team history.
Boozer and Snell will become the 16th and 17th members of the New York Jets Ring of Honor. The other members of the Ring of Honor include Weeb Ewbank, Winston Hill, Joe Klecko, Curtis Martin, Don Maynard, Joe Namath (2010 Inaugural Class); Larry Grantham, Freeman McNeil, Gerry Philbin, Al Toon (2011); Mark Gastineau, Wesley Walker (2012); Marty Lyons (2013); Wayne Chrebet, Leon Hess (2014).
