Geno Smith at Jets’ practice, Revis is not

FLORHAM PARK, N. J. — New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis might not play against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.

Then again, he might.

Revis’ status became a question sudden on Wednesday when the Jets’ injury report was issued showing him as a non-participant because of a groin issue.

The injury report was released after head coach Todd Bowles’ daily press conference, during which Bowles said nothing about Revis being hurt.

Revis certainly didn’t appear hurt on Monday, when he recovered two fumbles and recorded an interception in the Jets’ 20-7 win over the Indianapolis Colts. He was named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week on Wednesday.

The Jets declined to provide a further update on Revis late Wednesday afternoon. A spokesman said Bowles would discuss Revis on Thursday.

Meanwhile, although one-time starter Geno Smith returned to practice, the Jets do not have a quarterback controversy, at the top, anyway.

But there should be competition within the backups.

Smith practiced in full Wednesday for the first time since he suffered a broken jaw during a locker room fight with ex-Jets linebacker I.K. Enemkpali on Aug. 11.

Bowles said Wednesday that Smith could serve as the backup to Ryan Fitzpatrick this Sunday against the Eagles.

Fitzpatrick was backed up the first two weeks by raw rookie Bryce Petty, whom the Jets hope to keep off the field this season.

Barring a faceplant by Fitzpatrick, Smith is expected to back up the veteran for the rest of the season.

Bowles said Tuesday that Fitzpatrick will remain the Jets’ starting quarterback, even when Smith is fully healthy

–The Jets are looking to escape a not-very-exclusive club on Sunday, when they seek the franchise’s first-ever win over the Eagles.

The Jets are 0-9 all-time against the Eagles. While there are six other instances of a team being winless against an opponent, all those lopsided series involve at least one post-1976 expansion team.

In addition, no team has lost more to an opponent it has not beaten than the Jets.

The Miami Dolphins come closest with an 0-7 record against the Houston Texans, who began play in 2002.

The Jacksonville Jaguars, who entered the league in 1995, are 0-6 in the regular season against the New England Patriots, although the Jaguars did beat the Patriots in a wild card game following the 1998 season.

Coincidentally, the Jaguars and Patriots also play each other this week.

The Texans are winless against two teams — the Eagles (0-4) and Minnesota Vikings (0-3).

The Dallas Cowboys are 0-4 against the Baltimore Ravens, who were established in 1996, while the Chicago Bears (0-3) are also winless against the Texans.

–Wide receiver Titus Davis was signed to the Jets’ practice squad Tuesday. Davis provides the Jets some depth after wide receivers Eric Decker (knee) and Chris Owusu (leg) were injured in Monday night’s 20-7 win over the Colts.

The Jets are the second NFL team for Davis, who signed with the San Diego Chargers as an undrafted free agent out of Central Michigan in May. Davis was released Aug. 30.

Davis had 204 catches for 3,700 yards and 37 touchdowns at Central Michigan and is the only player in FBS history to catch at least eight touchdown passes in four straight seasons.

NOTES: Defensive end Jordan Williams was released from the practice squad Tuesday. … Wide receiver Chris Owusu (knee) needs arthroscopic surgery and will miss at least one game. Owusu was injured during Monday’s 20-7 win over the Colts. He has four catches for 55 yards this season.
