Seahawks, SS Chancellor stalemate continues
The Sports Xchange
The stalemate continues between the Seattle Seahawks and strong safety Kam Chancellor, still holding out in hopes of leveraging a new contract from the team, with no end in sight.
According to Pro Football Talk per a source with knowledge of the situation, there has been no contact between the Seahawks and Chancellor’s agent since Sept. 8.
Chancellor missed the entire preseason and the first week of the regular season.
With the cost of Chancellor’s holdout already at $1.87 million through Week 1, the addition of another lost game check will add another $267,000 to the total, pushing the total north of $2.1 million, according to the report.
“I’m just disappointed like I know he is and everybody is that it hasn’t found a way to get him here,” coach Pete Carroll said this week as the Seahawks prepare for a key early season matchup against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night. “I think our guys have dealt with everything that has come at us in a really straight-up fashion and they’re really focused on playing football and doing the best we can. We can’t coach the guy that’s not here. Can’t do anything about it.”
Chancellor told NFL Network last week that he and the Seahawks are $900,000 apart in negotiations and the team is being “petty.” Chancellor said he is not asking for more money but wants $4 million moved from 2017 to 2016. That would bump his 2016 salary from $5.1 million to $9.1 million and lower his 2017 salary from $6.8 million to $2.8 million. He is scheduled to be paid $4.55 million this year.
The Seahawks will play a second game without Chancellor. Seattle lost 34-31 in overtime to the St. Louis Rams in Week 1 as his replacement, Dion Bailey, got beaten for a game-tying touchdown.
Seattle defensive end Michael Bennett said the Seahawks miss more than just the safety’s playmaking.
“We miss Kam Chancellor, not just the way that he plays, but the way that he approaches the game, his leadership,” Bennett said Thursday. “Even though Kam Chancellor wasn’t in the game, we had multiple chances of winning that game. I wonder, would the conversation be the same if we won the game? Would people be saying, ‘Hey, they don’t need Kam Chancellor’? And so it’s all about the wins and losses in this league.”
The loss, however, does not appear to have changed either side’s stance on a deal for the Pro Bowler.
