Ryan Mallett ‘Excited’ to Get the Start

When Ryan Mallett learned during preseason that he had lost the starting quarterback job to Brian Hoyer, he vowed to play this season. Mallett had no idea it would be this early in the season. After coach Bill O’Brien admitted Thursday that Mallett would start against Carolina, the quarterback expressed his feelings about replacing Hoyer on game into the season. “You feel bad when it’s one week, but at the same time, you’re excited to get out there and show what you’ve been working toward,” Mallett said. When O’Brien pulled Hoyer and replaced him with Mallett with 6:10 left in the Kansas City game, he threw a touchdown pass and two-point conversion pass to DeAndre Hopkins and ignited a field goal drive to pull them within seven in the 27-20 defeat.
