Browns may turn to Manziel versus Titans
The Sports Xchange
Johnny Manziel is being prepared to start for the Cleveland Browns this Sunday as the status of injured Josh McCown remains uncertain.
McCown suffered a concussion in the first quarter of Sunday’s loss to the New York Jets and was replaced by Manziel. McCown is subject to the NFL concussion protocol and must be cleared before he can return to action.
Browns coach Mike Pettine told reporters he didn’t want to make an immediate decision on which quarterback will start against the Tennessee Titans. Pettine would prefer to see if there is an improvement in McCown’s health.
Manziel was 13-of-24 passing for 182 yards and his first NFL touchdown against the Jets. But he also was responsible for three turnovers – one interception and two fumbles.
The 2013 Heisman Trophy winner from Texas A&M stared two games last season and was highly ineffective. He appeared in five games and completed just 51.4 percent of his passes and was intercepted twice.
The 36-year-old McCown started 11 games last season for Tampa Bay Buccaneers but suffered a thumb injury during Week 3 that hindered his season. He also started five games for the Chicago Bears in 2013 while Jay Cutler was injured.
