Cowboys push to sign DT Crawford

Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Tyrone Crawford could be the beneficiary of the league-wide flurry of signings before Sunday’s Week 1 opener.

Crawford, 25, was a target of the Cowboys for a new deal at the start of training camp and the two sides closed the gap in early September. Negotiations could lead to a new deal by Sunday’s opener against the New York Giants.

The Cowboys had a purge of their roster in which longtime elite pass rusher DeMarcus Ware was released and Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jason Hatcher left to join the Redskins, but recovered in the past two drafts with young defensive players including 2015 second-round defensive end Randy Gregory.

Crawford is part of a defensive line that believes it can be vastly better than most pundits credit it for entering the season.

The agile 290-pound under tackle had three sacks and 29 quarterback hurries last season and started 15 games in just his second full season. Crawford missed the 2013 season with a ruptured Achilles.
