Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Tim Tebow and Buffalo Bills quarterback Matt Cassel were among the notable cuts Saturday as NFL teams reduced their rosters to the mandatory 53-man limit.

Tebow was one of 22 players released by the Eagles, who also cut veteran offensive lineman John Moffitt and rookie running back Raheem Mostert.

Tebow, 28, had appeared to win the competition for the third quarterback job when Matt Barkley was traded to the Arizona Cardinals, but it was not immediately known if the Eagles intended to sign a quarterback behind starter Sam Bradford and backup Mark Sanchez.

Tebow played in all four of the Eagles’ preseason games, completing 21 of 36 passes with two touchdown passes and one interception.

Cassel started the first preseason game of the year and was considered the early favorite to start ahead of Tyrod Taylor and E.J. Manuel. However, it appears the Bills will keep just Taylor and Manuel on the roster.

The Bills paid Cassel a $500,000 roster bonus but avoided paying him a $4.15 million base salary for the season, according to Pro Football Talk.

–The New York Jets released quarterback Matt Flynn. leaving Bryce Petty as the only backup to Ryan Fitzpatrick while Geno Smith recovers from a broken jaw.

Flynn sent out a tweet, confirming the team’s move: “Thanks for the opportunity #nyjets, but it looks like I am headed back home to Louisiana. Looking forward to what’s next!”

The Jets also cut two-time Pro Bowler Jason Babin, an outside linebacker who played all 16 regular-season games last year. He started four of them and made two sacks.

–The Cincinnati Bengals released defensive tackle Devon Still among 22 roster moves.

Still, whose daughter Leah is battling cancer, was kept on the practice roster last year as a show of support by the team before being added to the 53-man roster.

Still re-signed with the Bengals in the offseason after not getting much attention as a free agent.
