Seahawks OC Bevell ‘wouldn’t change’ SB play call
The Sports Xchange
Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell is sticking with his Super Bowl playcall, a 2nd-and-goal pass that was picked off by New England Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler.
Bevell told Sports Illustrated that he wouldn’t change the call he gave quarterback Russell Wilson during a time out with less than 30 seconds to go in the Super Bowl.
Wilson tried to fire a slant to reserve receiver Ricardo Lockette in the slot. Butler jammed through Lockette to seal the win for the Patriots.
“That play we called will always be there to drive me. I wouldn’t change it, I think it was the right thing,” Bevell said. “Coach Carroll has done a great job with it as well. I think to answer your question, in terms of totally moving on, that night is rough, the next morning is rough, getting on the plane is rough, but as soon as I got here and I was able to watch it for myself on the tape and see our copy and look at it that way and do the analyzing of it, once that was over I was able to put it behind me. I’m okay. I really am.”
Following the game, coach Pete Carroll took responsibility for the call. Bevell, who calls plays for the team, said it was his own decision.
In the offseason, the Seahawks acquired tight end Jimmy Graham, which gives them the top two red-zone producers in the NFL over the past three seasons (Marshawn Lynch).
Lynch led the NFL with 13 rushing touchdowns in 2014.
The Patriots had six goal-to-go situations in the 2014 regular season with a line of scrimmage of the 1-yard line or closer. Five times they allowed rushing touchdowns.
