Cowboys OG Martin diagnosed with severe stinger

Dallas Cowboys All-Pro offensive guard Zack Martin was diagnosed with a severe stinger in his neck after a scary on-field collision left the second-year starter motionless on the field Tuesday in a joint practice with the St. Louis Rams.

Pulling to block in front of running back Darren McFadden, Martin collided with Rams defender and appeared to instantly lose mobility in his extremities.

Martin, a first-round pick in 2014 voted an All-Pro as a rookie right guard, is scheduled for further tests.

“Hopefully that’s all it will be. Obviously scary and something that we were concerned about but think we can keep our fingers crossed there and hopefully he’ll be fine,” Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said.

The Cowboys and Rams were unable to finish the second scheduled joint practice Tuesday because of fighting between the two teams.

At least three fights broke out, one in which wide receiver Dez Bryant was punched by Rams cornerback Imoan Claiborne and another that involved Rams first-round pick Todd Gurley.

“There is no excuse for it,” Rams coach Jeff Fisher said. “You can’t blame it on anybody. It just happened. Fortunately, nobody got hurt.”
