NFL adds suspension to injury for Bucs DT Spence
The Sports Xchange
Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Akeem Spence has been suspended for one game for violating the NFL’s policy on substance abuse.
Spence already was expected to miss the first six weeks of the season as he recovers from back surgery. He is expected to remain on the physically-unable-to-perform list once the season begins.
The suspension is the apparent result of a 2014 arrest for marijuana possession in Alabama.
Spence tweeted in apparent reference to the suspension on Monday (edited), “They try to kick in dirt when you’re down. All good!!! (I will) come back stronger and better than ever!!! #97.”
Spence, 23, has started 19 of 32 games for the Buccaneers since being drafted in the fourth round in 2013. He has 68 tackles, four sacks and three fumble recoveries.
The Bucs recently added defensive tackle Tony McDaniel to take Spence’s spot on a deep D-line that also includes Gerald McCoy, Clinton McDonald and Henry Melton.
