Jets’ Smith has surgery on jaw
The Sports Xchange
New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith underwent surgery on Thursday to repair a broken jaw from a punch thrown by former teammate Ikemefuna Enemkpali.
Doctors inserted plates and screws, but Smith’s jaw was not wired shut, the team said in an announcement. He will remain in the hospital overnight.
The Jets previously said Smith is expected to be out six to 10 weeks.
The team was in Detroit on Thursday night without Smith for its preseason opener against the Lions. Ryan Fitzpatrick was the starter in place of Smith.
Enemkpali was released after the Tuesday incident and later claimed off waivers by the Buffalo Bills, who are coached by Rex Ryan, formerly with the Jets when they drafted him in 2014.
