Texans-Redskins joint practice disrupted by fights

The joint practice between the Houston Texans and Washington Redskins was disrupted by a series of brawls on Saturday.

Several fights broke out on two separate practice fields at the Redskins’ training camp facility in Richmond, Va. Practice ended an hour earlier than scheduled.

Redskins head coach Jay Gruden called one fight a “nasty brawl” and acknowledged that the day had been wasted.

“I do wish we had that practice,” Gruden told reporters. “We had some red zone, some two-minute, some great situational work we were going to do today. Unfortunately, we didn’t get it done.”

Gruden said he will reconsider “going three straight days in pads” against another team for joint practices in the future.

“I think against New England last year, we were probably two days and then we went in shorts the day before a game,” Gruden said. “I think three days in a row is probably too much. These guys get a little … .

“The third day in shorts there is no way they can really fight cause there is no contact. … I know (the Texans) are sick about what happened today, as we are, but that happened and we just have got to move on.”

Texans coach Bill O’Brien had a different viewpoint on fights breaking out during joint practices.

“It’s training camp, you know?” O’Brien said. “It’s intense out there. It’s too bad, but that’s just what happens with two competitive teams.

“We both got work done. We just separated the practice. It’s a good couple days, I guess two and a half. It was good.”

Texans defensive end J.J. Watt told ESPN after practice that he was “perfectly fine” with the fights.

“Sometimes when you’re out there, tempers get flared,” Watt said. “Everybody’s competitive; it’s a bunch of competitive guys on both sides of the ball. Sometimes things happen. It’s just the way it goes.”

Among the fights was an altercation between Texans rookie cornerback Kevin Johnson and Redskins wide receivers Andre Roberts and Pierre Garcon, according to the Houston Chronicle.

There was also a fight between Redskins linebacker Adam Hayward and Texans offensive tackle Aaron Adams.
