Report: Dolphins players told Tannehill to start

Published

on

Multiple Miami Dolphins players have been told quarterback Ryan Tannehill will remain the starter this week against the Oakland Raiders, according to NFL.com.

Coach Joe Philbin has been noncommittal on the former first-rounder retaining his starting job, but players, who were not named in the report, were told that Tannehill will start Sunday’s game in London.

Wide receiver Rishard Matthews told The Associated Press that Tannehill has been taking all of the snaps with the first team in practice. Teams drills are not open to the media during the regular season.

Teammates continue to show their confidence for Tannehill.

“I think he’s fine,” wide receiver Mike Wallace said Tuesday, according to ESPN.com. “Since I’ve been here I’ve never seen Ryan, good, bad or indifferent, act any different at the end of any game. He’s been the same as when I first met him and I have enough to worry about with my own position and trying to do well. I can’t worry about what coach is going to do. Whoever coach puts out there that’s who we’re going to roll with and we’re going to be behind him 100 percent no matter who it is, even if it’s me at quarterback.”

During his press conference Monday, Philbin was noncommittal about Tannehill starting against the Raiders at Wembley Stadium.

“We’ll decide our game plan before we leave to play Oakland,” Philbin said Monday.

Miami is scheduled to leave Thursday for London.

Tannehill, the No. 8 overall pick in the 2012 draft, has slumped this season. Despite a season-opening win over the New England Patriots, Tannehill is only completing 56.5 percent of his passes and his passer rating has declined each week to get him to 74.1 for the year.

Matt Moore is the Dolphins’ backup quarterback.

Asked if the two were competing this week for the starting job, Philbin replied: “We’ll utilize the players the best way we see fit.”

Philbin said repeatedly at his press conference Monday that he will bring the best 46 players to London.

Phiblin was asked if it hurts Tannehill by not saying for sure that he will start against the Raiders.

“That’s my answer I’m sticking to it,” Philbin said.
