Former UCLA and Detroit Lions running back Mel Farr died Monday, the family confirmed. Farr was 70.

Farr played seven NFL season with the Lions (1967-73) and was named Offensive Rookie of the Year in 1967.

Farr finished his pro career in 1973 with 3,072 yards rushing and 36 total touchdowns because of knee and shoulder injuries.

After his playing career, Farr bought a dealership for $40,000 and grew it to become Farr Automotive Group, one of the nation’s largest auto empires that expanded to 11 dealerships.

That business was dismantled because of default loan payments to Ford Motor Company.
