Steelers CB Golson likely needs surgery

Pittsburgh Steelers second-round pick Senquez Golson could be out for the season if he opts for shoulder surgery.

Golson was hurt during spring workouts and his absence led the Steelers to acquire Brandon Boykin from the Philadelphia Eagles for a draft pick that could be a fourth-round selection if Boykin hits 60 percent playing time.

William Gay is one starter but the turnover in the secondary leaves more questions than answers in camp. Boykin, primarily a nickel cornerback with the Eagles, is in the mix to start but Cortez Allen was running opposite Gay with the first team defense last week.

Troy Polamalu and cornerback Ike Taylor retired, and Golson was viewed as an instant contributor.

Meanwhile, the Steelers on Monday activated center Maurkice Pouncey off the physically-unable-to-perform list. He had been out with a foot injury.
