NFL Most Valuable Player Power Rankings 9/23

How did this past weekend’s games change the MVP race? Find out inside.

We saw a lot of great individual performances in Week 3. We’re going to keep tabs on the front runners for league MVP. Check out last week’s MVP power rankings here.

1. Russell Wilson, III, Seattle Seahawks– Although Seattle is perhaps the most complete team in the NFL, Russell Wilson is the man that makes everything work. Wilson isn’t going to have gaudy statistics, but there’s a level of clutchness and maturity that goes far beyond his years. His ability to escape is back-breaking to a defense and he always seems to make the correct read.

2. Peyton Manning, Denver Broncos– If we’re talking about regular season awards, you can probably make a case for Peyton Manning for MVP every year. Manning takes on more responsibility than anyone as far as calling his own plays and his “Football IQ” is ascending to make up for his deterioration of physical skills.

3. Philip Rivers, San Diego Chargers– Although the Chargers have had a slew of injuries on both sides of the football, they keep winning and looking impressive thanks to the play of quarterback Philip Rivers. Rivers was seemingly left for dead in NFL circles prior to the arrival of head coach Mike McCoy, and now he’s playing at the highest level of his career, without a slew of talent around him.

4. J.J. Watt, Houston Texans– J.J. Watt is simply the most dominant defensive player in the game and probably the best we’ve seen since Reggie White. He has to be accounted for on every play and he’s impossible to block with one man. Watt might be the most indispensible non-quarterback in the National Football League.

5. DeMarco Murray, Dallas Cowboys– The Cowboys are a little better than everyone thought they’d be, and a big part of that has been the running of DeMarco Murray. Cowboys’ head coach Jason Garrett has finally decided to embrace running the football behind that rebuilt Cowboys offensive line and Murray leads the NFL in rushing with 385 yards through three games.

After the Buccaneers surprised everyone by taking a kicker with the 59th overall pick in the draft, G.M.
