SAN DIEGO — Things are so sunny in San Diego, the Chargers got the day off.

A three-day minicamp was sliced to two and that had players smiling. Coach Mike McCoy grins, too.

“I like the energy,” said McCoy, who canceled practice. “I like our enthusiasm.”

Year three of McCoy’s Chargers stint heads to next month’s training camp upbeat. Especially with what’s on the field. Quarterback Philip Rivers didn’t go anywhere and has shifty running back Melvin Gordon.

The offensive line is rebuilt. The secondary looks better and special teams gets a boost with wide receiver Jacoby Jones returning kicks.

But off the field?

Minicamp also featured All-Pro safety Eric Weddle’s scathing remarks about the Chargers not extending his contract. The Chargers were also criticized by the city of San Diego in the increasingly contentious stadium talks. The drumbeat of a possible move to the Los Angeles area grows.

“We don’t think about that,” cornerback Brandon Flowers said. “I’ve only been to L.A. once in my life.”

The Chargers report back on July 29 with some questions answered and others undetermined.

Will the front line jell? Will a pass rush develop? Will an uneven run defense shine? Those fixes are between the sidelines.

To a man, they claim outside distractions won’t cloud their vision. We’ll see. But the offseason workouts end with the best of news: no injuries.

And Weddle is here for at least another year; same goes for the Chargers in San Diego. While all that works itself out, McCoy looks at the field. He likes what he sees.
