RENTON, Wash. — The Seattle Seahawks are likely to head into the summer without any resolution to Russell Wilson’s future.

Reports as the team entered minicamp this week indicated the two sides remain far apart on a contract extension for the quarterback, who is entering his fourth season. Without a new deal, Wilson will play the 2015 season on his current contract which calls for him to make $1.5 million in 2015. He could then technically become an unrestricted free agent in 2016, but the Seahawks would undoubtedly place a franchise tag on him for that season.

Still, while the Seahawks know they control Wilson for the next few seasons (they could conceivably place tags on him through 2018), the team had hoped to sew up Wilson’s deal this summer and then be able to set about taking care of a few other extensions, namely middle linebacker Bobby Wagner.

The Seahawks this week were at least able to solidify their quarterback depth chart, re-signing Tarvaris Jackson on Tuesday to again serve as Wilson’s backup

Jackson, the team’s starter in 2011, has been the backup the last two seasons playing only in mop-up duty. Jackson had reportedly been searching for a team where he might have a better chance to play, but that didn’t work out and he will return to Seattle where he will again back up one of the most durable quarterbacks in the league in Wilson.

–Seattle will have just one practice during minicamp after violating NFL rules last year on practicing during minicamps. As announced by the NFL at the time, the violation was for permitting the club’s players to engage in excessive levels of on-field physical contact during the team’s 2014 mandatory minicamp for veteran players. Seahawks players will be paid for the cancelled practice sessions.

–It was reported that two Seattle players who sat out OTAs for contractual reasons — defensive end Michael Bennett and linebacker Bruce Irvin — attended meetings on the first day of minicamp and are expected on the field Thursday. The two would have been subject to fines of up to $70,000 for not participating.
