Lions’ Tulloch out for season after celebrating sack

Published

on

Detroit Lions linebacker Stephen Tulloch will be placed on season-ending injured reserve after suffering a torn ACL while celebrating a sack, coach Jim Caldwell announced Monday.

Tulloch’s left knee buckled while he was jumping up and down after making a sack of Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the first quarter of Sunday’s 19-7 victory.

Caldwell knows it’s hard to curb such celebrations.

“Those things are flukes and our guys will keep being excited about what they do,” Caldwell said Sunday.

On Monday, Caldwell said, “It’s a loss there. Unfortunately, in our game, it happens all too often.”

Tulloch had appeared in 131 consecutive games without an injury since being drafted in the fourth round in 2006 by the Tennessee Titans out of North Carolina State. He has spent the past four seasons with the Lions.

“It’s unfortunate, man,” Tulloch said after the game. “You’re passionate about the game. You want to get up and celebrate, and it happened. People do it a million times. Unfortunately it happened to me, but I’ve been healthy for nine years in my career, never missed a game, let alone damn near plays.

“Sitting on the sideline is new to me, man. It’s sickening. But I’ll be all right. I’ll get right and be able to help this team.”

Tulloch has 806 tackles and 13.5 sacks in his career, including 135 tackles last season.
