Injured Seahawks make progress

RENTON, Wash. — Although there has not even been a contact drill yet, the defending NFC champion Seattle Seahawks were taking a close look at their injury list as they wound up this week’s OTAs on Friday

Coach Pete Carroll gave an update on the conditions of four players coming back from injuries and another, safety Kam Chancellor, issued his own report earlier in the week.

Chancellor said Tuesday that not only has he recovered from the MCL injury that initially threatened to keep him out of the Super Bowl, but that he is in the best shape since joining the Seahawks.

Chancellor said he was working out within two weeks of the Super Bowl, the earliest he has been able to begin training seriously after any of his seasons with the Seahawks.

Carroll seemed mostly upbeat about four others with injury concerns — free safety Earl Thomas (shoulder surgery), wide receiver Paul Richardson (ACL), cornerback Jeremy Lane (ACL) and nose tackle Brandon Mebane.

Thomas should be ready for the season but is sitting out the OTAs after undergoing shoulder surgery.

“He looks great,” Carroll said. “They (the team’s trainers) are really fired up about his return and the rehab work that he did already, so it looks like there should be no problems.”

Richardson, who suffered his ACL injury in the divisional playoff win over Carolina, could also be ready for camp, but Carroll said “we’ll be careful there.” Richardson also missed a year at Colorado with an ACL injury to the same knee and Carroll said the fact that he has been through the same injury should help in his recovery.

Lane remains the Seahawks player who is most questionable for the start of the season. Lane tore his ACL and suffered a broken wrist on the same play early in the Super Bowl. While the knee is a nine-month or so proposition, it was thought the arm was healing well. But Carroll said this week that the arm has had some complications.

“He has got another concern with his arm,” said Carroll, and that while the knee is “doing great, his arm is going to take a little longer than we thought to heal.”

Still, Carroll hopes Lane will be ready for training camp, but it seems more probable than not that he will begin training camp on the PUP list.

Carroll is more optimistic that Mebane will be ready to go for training camp after missing the last seven games of the 2014 season with a hamstring injury. Carroll said Mebane has been having one of his best offseasons and appears in shape to rival that of any time in his career.

–Mark Rogers, the agent for quarterback Russell Wilson, said in an interview with radio station 710 ESPN Seattle that while talks on an extension for his client are positive and encouraging, Wilson would also be fine with playing the 2015 season without a new deal.

In other words, no significant movement has happened yet and the status of the talks remains unchanged. Wilson is due to make $1.5 million in 2015 in the last season of his initial four-year rookie contract. The team is thought to have made an initial offer that was nowhere near what Wilson wants, leading to speculation of a stalemate between the two parties.
