Colts seek depth, versatility for offensive line
The Sports Xchange
INDIANAPOLIS — Second-year lineman Jack Mewhort, a guard last year, worked out at right tackle during the Indianapolis Colts’ organized team activities this week.
With questions surrounding the availability of 2014 starter Gosder Cherilus due to injury concerns, Mewhort — who worked at tackle while at Ohio State — is getting a longer look at the position.
Mewhort, who has been nursing a few aches and pains of his own, split time at right tackle with Joe Reitz in workouts. Second-year tackle Ulrick John, who missed is rookie season with an ankle injury, and 2015 seventh-round draft pick Denzelle Good also saw work there.
“Until we know where Gos is at and we get Mewhort back full time, I’m just glad we’ve got some other guys that can fill in right now,” coach Chuck Pagano said.
“Versatility is hard to find. So obviously (Mewhort) playing a bunch of spots and playing elsewhere along the line is definitely ‘the more that you can do.’ I think everybody is well aware of that spot and us trying to fill that hole right now. I’m fully confident that we’ve got the guys in this building right now that we’re going to be fine there.”
–Outside linebacker Bjoern Werner has yet to fully participate in the Colts’ workouts. Werner is recovering from a shoulder injury that severely limited his playing time over the final month of the 2014 season.
Werner, the Colts’ No. 1 draft pick in 2013, was less than spectacular when he did play.
He says injuries slowed his progress both seasons. Werner had foot and knee issues that limited his practice and playing time.
“It’s just that simple,” he told the Indianapolis Star. “Since I’ve entered the league, I haven’t been healthy one time.”
He added that he was reluctant to talk about his issues because he wanted to avoid sounding like he was making excuses.
“I tried to be the tough guy. I said, ‘As long as I can walk or run, I’m going to be out there. Coach (Pagano) is going to have to make that decision. I’m not going to take myself out.'”
Pagano finally did just that, sitting him for the AFC Championship Game at New England.
Pagano maintains that he has not lost faith in Werner.
“The biggest thing for him is to just stay healthy,” Pagano said. “We’ve seen him do it. I’ve got video evidence. We’ve got it on tape. … If he can stay healthy, he’ll have a great year. Because you have to be out there. The only way you gain confidence is by playing and making plays.”
–The Colts signed cornerback Chance Casey and undrafted free-agent guard Will Corbin.
The team also waived-injured cornerback Josh Mitchell. If Mitchell clears waivers, he will revert to the team’s injured-reserve list. Also waived were rookie offensive tackle Demarco Cox and wide receiver Josh Lenz.
