Chargers’ Weddle expected to remain absent
The Sports Xchange
San Diego Chargers Pro Bowl safety Eric Weddle reportedly will remain absent from voluntary workouts this week as he seeks a new contract.
Weddle missed the first sessions and, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, will sit out organized team activities Tuesday through Thursday. The Chargers also will hold voluntary OTAs June 1-3 and June 8-11. There are no penalties for skipping OTAs, but he could be fined if he misses mandatory minicamp June 16-18.
Weddle, who was named a first-team All-Pro last season, is entering the final year of his contract and is due to be paid $7.5 million. Last month, he said he felt “highly disrespected” by the Chargers because they had not addressed his contract.
General manager Tom Telesco has said the 30-year-old Weddle is among the veterans the team would like to extend.
