Seahawks LB Wagner hopes for extension ‘soon’

Seattle Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner is heading into the final year of his rookie contract but hasn’t heard anything from the team about an extension.

The Seahawks also are in the early stages of contract negotiations with quarterback Russell Wilson.

Wagner, who was voted to his first Pro Bowl and was named to the All-Pro team last season, said he hoped to have a deal “soon” despite no movement from the team.

“I’ve heard nothing so until I get something to sign then I haven’t heard nothing,” Wagner told the Seattle Times before throwing out the first pitch in Friday’s Mariners game.

Wagner and Wilson were taken in the 2012 NFL Draft. Wagner was drafted by the Seahawks in the second round and Wilson in the third round.

Wagner’s rookie contract expires at the end of the 2015 season and without an extension, he will hit unrestricted free agency. He is scheduled to make just $1.37 million this season.

Wilson and the Seahawks appear to be in a contract stalemate. Wilson reportedly wants more than $20 million per year, while the Seahawks aren’t willing to go that high.

Wilson also can become a free agent at the end of this season and could bet on himself, playing without a long-term deal to take negotiations into February and March 2016.

Wilson’s current contract — the final of his four-year rookie deal which would pay him $1.542 million. The Seahawks could put franchise tags on Wilson for 2016 and 2017.
