Rams Select Todd Gurley With 10th Overall Pick- Full Analysis

The Rams broke the two-year drought of no RB’s taken in Round 1. Find out what we think of the surprising pick.

The St. Louis Rams continued their offseason offensive renovation as they selected former Georgia running back Todd Gurley.

“You don’t take a running back in the top 10. You especially don’t draft a running back high when he’s coming off a serious knee injury. And you don’t trust Jeff Fisher to coach a team to more than seven wins in a season. Sorry, Rams fans, this is an awful pick. Why not go with Devante Parker, who would have made life so much easier for Nick Foles? Or an offensive lineman like Andrus Peat, given all the issues the Rams have on their offensive front. This is a bad, bad reach. I originally thought the Rams would push for a playoff spot in 2015 … not anymore.”- Michael Lombardo

“Todd Gurley is a fantastic football player, and absolutely worthy of a top 10 pick, but this is still a puzzling selection for St. Louis. The Rams have other needs, and Tre Mason was a fantastic player for them a year ago. It’s absolutely impossible to argue against selecting Gurley, but there’s certainly a lot of argument that the Rams needed more help in other areas and that they could have picked up a strong tailback to compliment Mason later in the draft.”- Pat Donovan

“I’m fairly surprised at the team, but not at all with the timing. Todd Gurley is my favorite player in this draft and I would’ve taken him higher if I was picking in the Top 10 and needed a running back. I’ve personally been waiting for him to come into the league since the first time I saw him play in college. He’s so physical, so explosive and so gifted as a runner. It’s no stretch to say that in three years, provided he stays healthy, this is the best running back in the NFL. It’s a little bit of a shock coming from a Rams team I thought had finally replaced Steven Jackson with Tre Mason, but you can’t hate the hustle. St. Louis just got a star.” – Devon Jeffreys

—————————————————————————————————————————————-

“Love this pick if Gurley can stay healthy. I know running backs have become unfashionable this high in the draft, but with more teams building to shut down the passing game it is only a matter of time before the gate swings the other way. Gurley can be one of the swingers.” – Alex Hickey

—————————————————————————————————————————————-

“The shocker of the NFL Draft thus far. St. Louis drafted Tre Mason last year and he had a solid rookie campaign, but obviously he isn’t enough. Todd Gurley has NFL size at 6-foot-1, 222 pounds. Obviously, Gurley is coming off an ACL injury, but if he’s able to recover and produce, this pick may turn out to be gold. However, the Rams need to figure out who’s going to block for him.”- Mark Gunnels

—————————————————————————————————————————————-

“Clearly the Rams had Gurley as the best available injured player on their board.  Take a look at the NFL’s rushing leaders over the past few years and it’s littered with guys not taken in the first round.  I believe Gurley can be special, but he is coming off an ACL injury and the value just isn’t there with so many other potential productive backs.  Jeff Fisher might not be around to see a completely recovered Todd Gurley.”- Charlie Bernstein
