Former Denver Broncos wide receiver Wes Welker says he has been cleared to continue playing after tests showed no adverse effects from the three concussions he suffered with the Broncos over the last two seasons.

Welker told Denver’s WUSA-TV that he was examined in February by Dr. Stanley Herring, a member of the NFL’s head, neck and spine committee. He also got passing marks from the Miami Dolphins’ doctors during his free-agent visit this month.

“I knew there were concerns out there; but, on top of that, I wanted to know for my own peace of mind. If there was something wrong, I wanted to know,” Welker told WUSA-TV. “The doctor said some people are able to take those hits. They get up and are able to come back from them. And there’s some people who get them and they’re never the same. For me, everything came out all good.

“My cognitive tests were good. All kinds of tests came out good. I had a trip to Miami and doctors said everything looked good.”

Welker, who turns 34 on Friday, said he wants to return for an 11th NFL season.

“I am 100 percent committed to keep playing,” he said. “I feel like every day that goes by, the chances are less so. But I want to play.”

Welker’s market might heat up after May 12, when free agents no longer count in the compensatory formula.

Welker has 890 receptions for 9,822 yards and 50 touchdowns in his career with the Dolphins (2005-06), New England Patriots (2007-12) and Broncos. Last season was his worst since his rookie year in 2005, as he caught 49 passes for 464 yards and two touchdowns.
