Browns GM: No ‘magic player’ in draft

Cleveland Browns general manager Ray Farmer confesses he is more than a little bit interested in the quarterback prospects in the 2015 NFL Draft.

But Farmer said Thursday also plans to practice restraint if presented an opportunity to acquire on of the top passers in 2015. Farmer made a series of trades in the 2014 draft, his first as a general manager, moving down, then up, and eventually selecting cornerback Justin Gilbert and quarterback Johnny Manziel.

The Browns pick 12th and 19th and Farmer has a total of 10 draft picks to work with, perhaps more ammunition than any team who might attempt to move up in the draft.

After coach Mike Pettine playfully said “Sure, why not?” in response to whether the team might trade up for Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota, Farmer gave the exact same three-word answer.

“There are things to like about the young man,” said Farmer, adding that many teams appreciate Mariota’s talent.

Any conversation about moving up or down in the draft are not going on yet, Farmer said, and anticipates that only when a team is actually “on the clock” will substantive talks take place.

Farmer denied there is immediately pressure to get his first-round picks right and said the “fairy tale” of getting one “magic player” is not something he believes in anymore.
